Holiday Ups and Downs..

Overall we had a wonderful Holiday… Jasper got to meet all of his cousins on Jeff’s side on Christmas eve:

Then we had a quiet Christmas at home just me, Jasper, Jeff and my mom and dad for brunch.

The following day my sister Roxanne and her boyfriend Adam came to visit (via LA) which was such a treat.

Jasper loves his Auntie Roxie and Adam who played guitar for him for hours.. so much so that just to show off, he rolled for the first time when they arrived!! I didn’t capture the first roll on video, in fact, I sort of only saw it out of the corner of my eye.. like a blur and heard a thump. I guess his first time was more of a “rolling onto his side and falling over” but now it’s old hat:

The crazy thing is that the very next day, even though he’d shown no inclination until then, Jasper started ALMOST rolling from back to front.  I caught his attempts on video because it’s just so amazing to me how he has learned to manouver his body all of the sudden.. watch him try to whip over his right arm to gather momentum and the way he crosses his legs to get on to his side. Now all he has to do is figure out how to get over that pesky tucked shoulder and our little man will be rolling both ways:

So those are some of the ups..

The downs are that Jeff left for Hong Kong for two weeks on Saturday :(

I moved with Jasper to my parents house until he gets back… yes I am a wimp. I just couldn’t figure out how to manage everything in the morning (pumping, showering, getting me ready, Jasper ready) without an extra set of hands. Particularly since Jasper is such a crappy sleeper lately. ..Which brings me to our next down: Sleep.

We have hit the four month wakeful period full force now. Kill me now.

Not only does Jasper fight going to sleep as if his life depended on it, but he will not stay asleep for a nap longer than 30 minutes and has been waking up at night every two hours or so. Sometimes just to cry or from gas pains and sometimes to eat. Either way, it’s exhausting and a huge step backwards. I know this is “normal” for four month olds, but it’s compounded by Jasper’s tummy problems and I am quickly becoming a basket case.

Four month wakeful is such a huge issue that I’ll save it for another post, but suffice it to say that it SUCKS.

More on everything later.. In the meantime,  I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday and I wish you a joyous new year!!

  1. Oooh boy, do I feel your pain. We hit the 4 month wakeful period and I was up every 2 hours, but this has been going on for two+ months now, and Annora is now waking up every hour. Last night she was up every 20 minutes for about 2 hours! I felt like shooting myself this morning. :) I hope you have more luck than I did and this ends for you quickly. Annora is 5 1/2 months old and there’s no end in sight. I’m rapidly losing my mind.

  2. Oh Chantal, you poor thing! Well it does at least help to know there are other sleepless mothers going through the same thing right? UGH… I really hope it ends for both of us soon!

  3. My son waited until 5.5 months to do this wakeful period. We are also still in the midst of figuring out how to make it work for all involved. I wish you the best

  4. Ugh, we are also in the thick of the wakeful period, and my baby is 5.5 months old. He started about a month ago. Starting cereal hasn’t helped, and the past three nights he’s been up every hour! I’m also losing my mind and I don’t know what to do. Our plan for tonight is to stop swaddling to see if he’s waking himself up by struggling against the swaddle. I don’t know, I’m willing to try anything at this point!

  5. we are sending super-positive sleepy vibes Jaspers way – and magical sugary sweet dreams of a full night sleep to you!
    Happy New Year!

  6. Just a quick update–not swaddling certainly didn’t HURT anything in relation to my baby’s sleep pattern. He was still up a few times during the night, but he went to sleep just fine and wasn’t up any *more* than he has been for the past few nights.

So, at least with this wakeful period I can make it do double-duty and avoid any sort of stop-swaddling transition that might have happened down the road!

Also, I gave in and ordered a Baby Crack machine from Kohls. I’m ready to try anything to help baby sleep!

  7. Ack! Farah and Marybeth you are not giving me much hope that this will resolve anytime soon!

Marybeth, I’m so glad that you have at least kicked the swaddle habit. I’ve been doing one arm (left arm) out for naps and that works ok, but last night I had to resort to full swaddle and it still took me 1.5 hours to get him to go to sleep!!!!ARGH!!!

I also have been using the baby crack machine for a long time and it hasn’t helped any, though maybe it would be worse without it?

  8. i just read your comment on my christmas post.. and i had to laugh because we DID go through the 4 month wakeful, in fact i wrote and re wrote and erased what i had originally written on my last comment to you about it! Liam’s was pretty bad for about a week… we are now working on some modified “sleep training” (via Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child book) we had a GREAT week with him last week, he was rocking with his naps and going to bed etc.. but this week he is back in daycare, and we are all in a funk again.
we weaned off swaddling a few weeks ago and are now using a sleep sack which we love! i do miss the “baby burrito” though.
i am sure that the minute we totally get through this, we will have teething to look forward to…
    good luck, hang in there!
    xo kari
    good luck!!!
