Photoshop Friday: A Peek Into Lightroom

You’ve heard me evangelize about Adobe Lightroom, but you probably have been wondering what all the fuss is about. I know I didn’t get it until I actually saw it. Actually, I didn’t get it until I saw it AND went through these excellent tutorials (scroll down the page  to where it says Lightroom 2.0 Basics) one by one and then it clicked and I couldn’t believe I’d been editing images without it!

The purpose of these videos is not to teach you how to use Lightroom because most of you don’t have it, and also because the tutorials I took do a much better job than I ever could, but rather to give you a really broad overview of what it is and how it’s different from Photoshop.

Without further ado, Welcome to Adobe Lightroom!

I just discovered your blog a few days ago and think it’s amazing! You are very talented! I recently just bough Lightroom 3 and I’m not too familiar with it yet, but was wondering if there was a way to blur out backgrounds in it?

ariana says:

Sheila, No, not at this time :(

Vicki Putnam says:

So I typed up a comment but don’t see it here. Maybe I didn’t hit submit. Anyway, thanks!!!!! Love your info.

Ariana,

Thanks so much!!! I think I will get the software right now to play with it! I will let you know how things work out.

Makes sense. And sounds good! Thanks again!

I am hooked on Lightroom!! I’m taking advantage of the 30-day trial perod – and I love it. I have Photoshop Elements which I like – but this I love – so easy! Thanks for sharing Ariana.

Thanks guys for letting me know you liked it! The best part is that it does SO much more than I showed you, from keyword tagging and organizing to creating cool web slideshows.. enjoy :)

Ariana, thanks so much for the Lightroom videos. I’ve now convinced my husband to get it – Yay!! Between your blog and clickinmoms, I’m learning how to produce great photos – thanks, Kristie

you know a “proper” camera AND now lightroom is on my mothers day wish list!!
have a great weekend!

Hi Mayday, so nice to “see” you here! If you can get your hands on the Sigma for $100, then yes yes yes! It’s normally $400, is the one you’re looking at used?

Have you considered getting Elements? There are some great deals on it right now.

I know what you mean about it seeming like older babies were SO much older.. and then before you know it there’s almost no difference at all :)

Samm, I would put it like this.. 95% of my photos I can edit in lightroom with just some white balance and exposure adjustments. It also takes care of cataloging and doing all my exports to jpgs etc. I can even do selective eye sharpening and apply certain “presets” which are like photoshop actions. If I do need to do something a little bit more detailed editing wise (like clone out a large object etc) I can just click “edit in photoshop” and it opens photoshop and saves a copy of the edited version along side the unedited version. Does that make sense?

Samm Ivri says:

Thanks for the tips! I will defintely check out the tutorials. I’ve been using Photoshop for about 10 years (used to do it professionally even a while back). But I have to admit, I’ve never even looked into Lightroom. How is it better for you than Photoshop for editing?

I am so excited to have your blog! 2litlebeans.blogspot.com gave it to me! You have such great stuff on here! we have the same cam and I am so excited to see what you can do with different lenses! I just ordered a Tamron 17mm-50mm F/2.8 and I’m thinking about getting the fixed lens you have (the sigma). It’s only $100, is it worth it?

I don’t have photoshop, though I’ve used my sister’s so I’m hoping to find it for sale on craigslist or ebay and I will be all over this site!

Thanks for the taking the time to share your wisdom! Jasper is getting so big and he’s so adorable!! When I had Brighton it seemed you’d been a mom forever, it’s weird they’re just a few months apart! :)

Ariana…the link to the tutorials came up a broken link for me.

Doh! Thanks, I fixed it :)
