Last week I got an email from a reader asking how I get the newborns I photograph swaddled so nice and tight. I had to laugh a little bit, because in all honesty, I find swaddling rather stressful. Which is why when Jasper was a baby we only used the miracle blanket instead of a traditional swaddle!
But, some moms love that swaddled look and I try to accommodate.. and usually it takes me a few times to get it right. For what it’s worth, here is the technique I use.. I actually practice this with a baby doll before my newborn sessions!
Some photographers like Amber Scruggs from Little Moon are masters of the awake-half-swaddle, where the baby is loosely swaddled and their hands are up near their face. I LOVE this look but it never works for me any newborn who I’ve tried to swaddle who wasn’t completely asleep has destroyed the swaddle with their arms unless they were down.
I think the size and type of material makes a big difference too..the more stretch or give, the better. If anyone has any other tips, please post them in the comments!
