Bye Bye XSI – Hello Mark II!
December 2nd, 2009 by ariana
After my brief obsession with the nikon D700, I have decided to stay with canon and finally, after deal hunting all weekend hit “checkout” on the 5D mark II!
I have total sticker shock – it’s a big investment, but I think (hope!) it will payoff in the long run both for my pictures of Jasper and future clients.
Ultimately, even though I believe the Nikon to be a superior camera, I wasn’t ready to jump ship to Nikon.. silly perhaps, but it seemed the equivalent of moving to another country and learning another language, and never being able to go back home (and having to sell all your possessions first to boot!) Of major consideration though was the price of the nikon professional quality lenses, they are about 50% more than the canon equivalent and not as readily available used. So, that’s my story. I can’t wait to share some images from my “second born” when it arrives!
There are some casualties of the upgrade, namely my MUCH beloved Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Lens which is designed for a crop sensor camera and won’t work with my new mark II.
I am selling it to fund the purchase of the 50mm 1.4 which will be on the full frame about the same focal length as the 30mm is on the Sigma. This lens is in PRISTINE condition, it sells new for $439 and I am selling it for $380 shipped to via UPS (within the continental US) via paypal (I will have to also incur the paypal fees). The reason that you should be tempted is that this is an EXTREMELY sharp version of this lens! If you read the reviews of this lens on amazon, there are some soft copies around, but this one is tack sharp. Here are some images I’ve taken with this lens:

For low light photography, you can’t beat this lens on a crop sensor like the rebel or a 40 or 50d.. the 30mm range is MUCH more useful than the ubiquitous 50mm and the 1.4 vs. 1.8 really does make a difference in sharpness. Even if you don’t buy mine, I highly recommend this as an upgrade from the 50mm 1.8.
I will also be selling my Canon Digital Rebel XSi!
It comes with the kit lens of course (and cables, battery etc) but I will also throw in the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens that was calibrated at canon. I will sell the camera + extra lens for $450 shipped and paypaled. It’s selling for $550 new before adding in the 50mm 1.8 which sells new for $98. For images taken with this camera, well, see this whole blog :) (or my flickrstream).
OK, sales pitch over… how was everyone’s thanksgiving?? I was home sick :( Had some weird stomach bug that gave me a low grade fever and intermittent nausea. I stayed home alone and Jasper went to Jeff’s cousin’s. I was really sad missing out on his first thanksgiving as an aware little being. I heard he was a big hit with the cousins of course – doling out kisses like nobody’s business. He’s quite the little affectionate guy.
It makes me sad that someday he’ll learn that boys aren’t supposed to “kiss other boys” or be openly affectionate. Not that I’m going to be the one to teach him, but either way it kills me to think of his loving nature being dampened – one of the inevitabilities of growing in our society I suppose, but one that I am NOT looking forward to!

intermittent nausea? maybe you truly will have a real 2nd born??!! Congrats on your 2nd born camera though!
LOL Alicia, if my mom hadn’t had the same illness days before the thought would have crossed mind :) That and the fever..!
Oh, I want that lens so badly! I will have to think about it but I’m not sure I can afford it. I’m so jealous of your new camera!
oh, you’ll love it! It is on my xmas list this year as well. On a side note though, you may want to hang on to your xsi, it is a great around the house camera when you don’t want to drag out the big boy and you always want a back-up!
I am very interested…. have to talk to the hubs… he just asked me what I want for Christmas! ;) You will LOVE the 50m 1.4 – I love it, even on my crop sensor. And you’ll surely get much more love out of that 85mm on the full frame!
Congrats on the new camera… I am very excited to see the amazing images you produce with it!
So sorry you didn’t get to enjoy Thanksgiving… :( Hope you are feeling better.
Oh… and what were you referring to when you asked me how I was liking CM on the photog board? I’m drawing a blank. Could just be a blonde moment… rare for a brunette, but as you know, it happens sometimes! ;)
If I wasn’t so in love with my 50mm we could just trade! ;) Maybe I wouldn’t miss it if I had the 30mm… hmmm….
If I would have saw this last week I would have bought the camera- ended up getting one on black friday. If you don’t get any takers on it though and just want to sell the 50mm I will buy it!
Sticker shock indeed! Although I’m sure it gives you that much more motiviation to pursue your photography business. I can’t wait to see the quality of photos you put out with your new camera!
Catharine, good point about the backup.. hadn’t thought about it. As for dragging out the big boy vs. the xsi, there isn’t much difference size wise that wouldn’t make me want to reach for the mark ii :)
Kimberly, let me know, I’d LOVE for it to go to you!!! Keep your 50 for when you upgrade to full frame someday too :)
Julie, congrats on your new camera, I’m sure you got a great deal!
Marybeth, where is your guide? Did you post it yet?
Ariana,
I have been saving up for this camera since July. I have enough to buy it from you and would love to have it as a christmas present for myself! Please email me – emzimm@gmail.com if you have not already sold it.
:)
oh so VERY jealous. enjoy!!! as i continue to drool.
Congratulations on the 5d Mark II!!!!! Be sure to post pictures when you get it!
I always think the same thing about the kisses and dread the day my boy no longer gives sweet smacks on the lips to everyone he loves!
I wish I could afford to buy your camera!
CONGRATS my friend! WOW and WOW and WOW – fantastic.
you already are a force to be reckoned with – now your creativity will be unSTOPPABLE!!!
let’s chat about the sigma 30…
“someday he’ll learn that boys aren’t supposed to “kiss other boys” or be openly affectionate. Not that I’m going to be the one to teach him, but either way it kills me to think of his loving nature being dampened – one of the inevitabilities of growing in our society I suppose, but one that I am NOT looking forward to!”
Can we hope that social norms can change in the next few years? It’s a long shot, but I can hope.
I will email this link to my husband… this is what i want for christmas :O)
Woo hoo! Congrats on the 5D!!!
[wipes drool off chin]
I can’t tell if people are interested in the camera or the lens… so is the Sigma still available ariana? Considering I just bought a speedlight a few months ago, I should really, really skip this. but, um, I’m weak. And I *have* been looking to upgrade from the 50. Here’s hoping it’s sold, and you’ve made the decision for me!
Shane, I’ll hope with you :)
Sorry everyone, the camera WITH the 50 1.8 are sold, though if you are really interested email me at ariana@becoming-mom dot net and I’ll keep you in mind if the sale falls through for somereason.
Jen, the Sigma is still available if Kari doesn’t want it.. email me if you are seriously interested!
I can’t WAIT to hear your reviews and comparisons between the xsi and mark ii!! I might possibly be handed down a 50D….up from the xsi but not a mark ii!!!!
