Daylight Savings Time Can Bite Me
November 2nd, 2009 by ariana
That was the subject of my twitter status update at 6:15 am Sunday Morning and could have been my status again this morning. I didn’t quite realize how luxurious my 7:30 Jasper wake up call had been until Daylight Savings Time came and screwed with our beautiful schedule and made my good 12-hour a night sleeper into an early riser once again. Whoever decided it was a good idea to “change time” obviously didn’t have a baby. I know I’ll appreciate it once Jasper is old enough to ride the bus in the morning, but right now, DST can kiss my ass.
How did your little one adjust to the time change? (I should say that we kept him up an hour later Saturday night to no avail.)
On to more pleasant topics: Halloween!!
Shot with my Canon Digital Rebel XSi and Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Lens at 1/100th, f2.8 and ISO 400 – natural light.
Too bad he wasn’t Spiderman, look at that pose with his hand – I could have photoshopped in a web shooting out from it!
The H&M boots ended up working out great as part of the costume – so glad I picked those up. It wouldn’t have been the same in stride rights ;)
I had a hell of a time getting him to sit on the Plexiglas in front of the backdrop stand for this shot. What finally worked was allowing him to play with a toy he liked for a little bit and then grabbing it and holding it up in front of me at which point I had a brief second to shoot before he’d get up and come after it. Always a challenge at this age..
I hope you have some pictures online of your little ones all dressed up so you can post a link in the comments – I can’t wait to see all the cuties in costumes!

Here’s a link to my little elf:

I think you should photoshop some kryptonite in his hand! Awesome shots, as per usual!
Alicia, I thought about that exact thing.. but then wouldn’t he be dying or something? What else would superman hold?? Gotta do some research :)
Love the costume and the bright colors against the white backdrop!
Eli was a little tiger. We both graduated from Clemson, so we felt it was appropriate! Matt wanted to dress him up as Hulk, since he’s such a bruiser and constantly growling, but he was the first to admit that E was quite a cute little tiger! And the growling ended up being quite appropriate!

On the DST topic–Eli has adjusted well so far. We started transitioning his night on Thursday, so he didn’t seem to notice since it was gradual. His afternoon nap has suffered, but that’s becoming more and more normal these days. When did Jasper drop his afternoon nap?
Daylight Savings Time is KILLING us. We’ve tried to keep our son up half an hour later the past two nights and he has been a sobbing wreck. Then, this morning, he was up for the day at 4:45.
I’m just going to try to go to bed early myself for the next few nights until we all adjust.
I have to add that Eli was not happy to be staying up later! He’s always a wreck if he stays up a minute past 7pm. We were anticipating a melt down, so we intentionally left the house to do something fun in hopes of keeping him up later, which seemed to work well. He was distracted while we were out, so he didn’t realize he was tired until we got in the car. Of course he screamed on the ride home all 3 nights, but it helped when Sunday morning came around!
Annora was a chicken, but I don’t have any pictures posted just yet. Coming soon to my facebook account, though!
DST hasn’t really affected us negatively here, thank goodness. Annora is getting up an hour earlier, but that’s actually good for us. She tends to sleep in until 9:30 or 10 most mornings (don’t hate me girls!) so yesterday and today she woke up at 8:30. She needs to be at daycare at 8:45 starting in February and I was starting to stress about how to transition her, so this is actually working in our favor right now.
And before everybody decides to throw rocks at me for being able to sleep in each day, Annora didn’t sleep AT ALL for the first 8 months and I was a walking, crying zombie all the time. So I’m finally catching up on that sleep now. :)
Oh, I so hear you on the whole time-change thing. I had my own vent on our blog about it yesterday.
Why? Why is it worth it this day and age? Are we REALLY saving on electricity costs? To me it’s like robbing Paul to pay Peter: instead of using electricity in the AM, we now use more of it in the PM. I say, go w/ the Arizona approach and ignore it altogether.
G woke up at 5:40 (new time) yesterday. It SUUUUUCKED.
Halloween-wise, our kid was a cow. I forced him to live my dream. Le sigh. Pics here: http://gnluv.wordpress.com/2009/10/31/boo-or-should-we-say-moo/
@chantal – i agree w/ you. I cringe sometimes when I tell others that G has sleeps through the night consistently. But we also had HELL for the first 3-4 months. I think there is an overall balance of sleep and some kids front load it or back load it. looking back, I’d pay the price initially to have a good sleeping kid now (I wasn’t saying that the first 3 mths, but I do now).
@ariana – great pics!! and i’m with you on DST. A took the brunt of the pain on Sunday morning, and i could tell she wasn’t happy about it! Worst part was that I didn’t anticipate it — duh!
mixed reviews on DST… Sunday was great – we kept Liam up late and he slept in until 8… (which would be a 2 hour sleep in from his normal 7 am without the time change)… then last night the poor little guy was falling asleep in his dinner at 6:00… so i finaly gave in, and took him up to bed by 7.. and he woke up at 6… i think baby steps and we’ll get used to it. The GOOD news is that we were WAY ahead of schedule this morning and had extra time for fun!
Liam was a yummy lion :) pics on my blog.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Super-Jaspers pics! and yet ANOTHER great use for plexiglass!!!
LOL, Shane! Annora was one of three kids born in my family last summer and she was the only one to not sleep. It killed me when we’d all get together and I was always an emotional mess, with bags under my eyes being totally exhausted and the other two women were in great shape and would talk about all the things they did during the day (when I had no energy for anything). It’s nice to sleep in now but I also feel like I kinda deserve the sleep now after the hellish first few months. :)
I feel your pain with DST, Ariana! It has totally wrecked our schedule!!! Love Jasper as Superman– he is adorable, as usual:-)!
totally agree on the DST rant! I have a baby who always wakes with the sun, so the last couple of weeks have been wonderful, but the last couple of days brutal. later bedtime doesn’t seem to make any difference. wondering how to remedy this situation myself, so if you come up with something make sure you post it!
Ugh, DST. We had JUST gotten Lydia to “sleep in” until 6:45. On Sunday, she woke up at 5:15 DST, and then this morning she woke up at 4:30 and laid in her crib talking to herself until 5:30. This is not fun.
Great shots Ariana! What a “super” costume. And I love the use of Plexiglass.
The whole time change sucked big time for us, too. Wes normally wakes around 6:30 am and he woke up at 5 yesterday: groan. Thankfully, he was up at 6:30 again today. I hope it stays that way. 6:30 is plenty early for me already, thankyouverymuch.
yikes, my mailbox is full and I didn’t see any responses until just now.. glad I’m not alone in my DST misery :) Going off to look at all the cuteness now!!
DST is kicking out household’s butts too!
GREAT shots. I have got to get a setup with some great natural light like this!
Halloween, we dressed as a frog. He’s going to hate me when he’s older! http://afirefamily.blogspot.com
OMG – DST screwed us over, too. She usually wakes up at 7, 7:30, so we expected her to be up at 6 after the time change. Nope – wide awake at FIVE! Ugh.
Jasper is the most adorable Superman ever!
Hi! Isn’t it that we have reverted back to Standard Time? I thought DST was for the summer. Anyhoo…I hate it, whatever one it is. Both of them, actually! Fall back AND spring forward.
I sent you a pic of my little ones. Wall-E and EVE.
We have decided that we are no longer participating in DST. We will choose a time and stick with it all year. Wonder if my boss will mind… Jack seems like he is constantly hungry and tired, so I think it is safe to say the time change has screwed up his schedule.
Michelle
I totally hear you on the DST…our little guy is like a clock. He usually wakes up from his afternoon nap around 4…now he wakes up at 3…even though we put him down at like 1:30-2 like his old schedule. Hour shorter nap = cranky evening baby. Plus, even though we put him down at 8 (his regular bedtime), I guess his body thinks it’s “late” and then he’s cranky and then he wakes up EARLIER than usual…5:30…ugh.
My DS was a little sushi roll…haha, no pics onlines…don’t have a blog or anything
So super cute, your Super Jasper!
DST sucked for us too. You are lucky that your “new” wakeup call is 6:30! Our PRE-DST wakeup call was 6:00 on the dot! So now… yep, you guessed it…. 5:00. Killing me. Stupid DST. I wish we could just stay on DST all year round! It also sucks for me being at work until 6 pm when it’s been dark for nearly 2 hours!
James was an adorable lion… I’ve only posted one quick snapshot of him on the blog… more to come!
UGH, DST has been horrible! My internal clock’s all messed up, our daughter is up an hour (or more) earlier, etc. I hate this time of year for this very reason. (And we tried the stay-up-late routine which didn’t work for us either.) But on the bright side you have some really cute photos of your Superman!
