8-9 month Milestones Part I: Pincer Grasp!

Because so many of you said your babes were a little younger than Jasper and enjoy knowing what is around the corner I want to talk about a few of the milestones that have happened recently. This month seems to be chock full of them, so I’ll start with just the Pincer Grasp.

This has been a really interesting one because it seems to come out of nowhere.  One minute he’s kind of just grabbing at things, and the next thing I know he’s picking up puzzle pieces by their little tiny red knobs!

The other more comical part of the pincer development is that they start pointing with their index finger at the same time (at least Jasper did).  It’s very cute, that little finger is pointing at everything and also INTO everything (including my nose while he’s nursing!)

But what has completely blown me away is the level of mastery he has over his fingers now..you know those books with the little paper flaps? The ones that I find sometimes hard to lift up? He’s got them down, even to the point of being able to lift stubborn ones up with his nail! How did he get so smart all of the sudden?

Of course I had to catch it all on tape. It’s actually a little montage of first lifting the flaps of the book and then the puzzle pieces. I couldn’t get him to turn the pages to the book which he also started doing around the same time (where did my little baby go??)

Is it just me or is this amazing?

Part II tomorrow.. (banging objects together, fun fun fun!)

  1. He is brilliant! Crazy how it all happens so fast. My little man is four months older than Jasper and is a MONKEY! He climbs on everthing! Keeps me on my toes. Don’t you love watchng him learn and grow? Nothing better!

  2. Yep! I have to keep reminding myself that Jasper isn’t the only baby to ever do x y or z.. when they are yours and you are watching it the first time it seems like everything they do is pure genius!

  3. I must truly be a mom now because watching his little fingers pinch those puzzles pieces in the beginning of your video made me smile and think ‘oh, how sweet!’. My babe learned to clap on Sunday and I almost had her signed up for Mensa so I understand the part about thinking everything new they do is amazing and genius, especially because they seem to learn so much, so quickly as they get a little older. It is bittersweet though because they become less ‘baby’ every day!

  4. Although he isn’t the only baby doing x y or z, he’s YOUR baby doing it! Even with five kids each milestone reached is amazing and I am so proud and think he must be the smartest baby ever. So don’t bother with reminding yourself what other babies are doing or have done, just enjoy your Jasper and keep thinking he’s the smartest baby on the planet!

  5. Wow! He is so smart! My baby, Bennett, is only 3 months so the pinching really seems advanced. It’s hard to imagine Ben ever being able to do that! BTW, Ben has the same pjs and we love them!

  6. It’s not just you… he IS AMAZING :) a brilliant little soul :)
i hope he feels better VERY soon too!

  7. So true Lelu, thanks.

Lindsay, you won’t even believe how much he is going to learn/change in those 5 short months!

Thanks Kari, those videos were taken last week when he was really sick, he’s feeling much better now, though super fussy still, not sure why.

  8. Oh my goodness. It’s so sweet to watch. I just can’t wait to see Wes grow and be able to do these things (and many more!).

  9. Very nice! Helping babies meet their milestones is what I do for a living, and I never tire of seeing it! And finally, a pair of jammies that James DOESN’T also have! ;)

  10. Ah, I just watched it. It IS amazing. Astounding, really, how babies learn. Kudos to you for helping him along the way.

I’m glad he’s feeling better now too.

  11. My boy is a GENIUS!!!!!!!

  12. I am with you both! He is a genius! A very cute Genius.

I love seeing that we have alot of the same clothes.

  13. It’s so cute isn’t it? My son Jake is a little older (14 mo.) Yesterday we were playing around, an he stuck his finger up my nose and BLOOD started pouring out my nose! It was actually very funny, and didn’t hurt, but I think he was scared by the look of horror on my husband’s face!
