Photoshop Tutorial : Adding Texture

It’s photoshop Friday! I’ve actually done TWO tutorials on texture, the first video starts and ends in Photoshop for those of you not interested in Lightroom.

Here is the link to the free texture used in this tutorial: http://www.flickr.com/photos/loxleyimages/2379679711/in/set-72157605663056066
from the wonderful set of free textures by Andrew McConnochie on Flickr.

There are also tons more free textures to play with here: http://cgtextures.com/

And here are the before and after images.

Texture Tutorial I

1st – SOOC (straight out of camera)

After editing in Lightroom: using a slight exposure adjustment, the preset “Sunkissed Purple” from my Lightroom Vintage Presets and cropping:

And finally, the after version. Same image as above with a little texture added for depth:

Texture Tutorial Part II

In this second video I show you the workflow of using Lightroom in conjunction with Photoshop to do specific editing (in this case adding texture) and flowing back into Lightroom. The second video also uses a texture that looks more like a backdrop than the first which is more subtle.

Here is the SOOC:

Shot with my Canon Digital Rebel Xsi
Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens at these settings:
F 2.0
Shutter speed 1/60
ISO 200.

And here is after editing in Lightroom with the preset “Light Dusky Purple” from my Lightroom Vintage Presets and cropping, and using this free texture:

I also want to show you another version I did earlier in which I added my presets “vintage soft” and then “split tone dreamy” before bringing it into photoshop to add the texture and the result was a bit different:

As you can see, by combining different processing techniques and different textures the possibilities are endless!

Since my post two days ago I have decided to open the flickr group I created for my presets up to anyone who wants to post an image they edited using any of the techniques from my tutorials. (You can grab the link to download my presets in the group rules.)

I think this is a fun way for me and all of you to see each other’s work and also our adorable kids!

You must be a member of flickr to join the group, but if you are not already you should be…

First of all, it’s free and great for image sharing. But I can’t even tell you how much I have learned from flicrk group discussions in particular, but also just by viewing the images of other photographers. Trust me on this, you won’t regret it :)

  1. Not feeling the love for the textures I guess!

sooooo, what should I do for next week’s tutorial? Might as well do something y’all want to learn about :)

  2. once you download the textures where do you upload them onto photoshop to use them

send me an email so i know you responded please.

  3. Hi Melissa, you don’t upload them anywhere really. You donwload the texture you want to use somewhere that you remember where you put it. Then in photoshop you go to the file menu and choose place. It will prompt you to open the file you want to place. You have to browse your computer to find the file you downloaded and then it will be in your document..

  4. thanks for the response.

P.S. i like your tutorial. thank you for doing it

  5. I’ve always wanted to learn about textures. I just can’t seem to figure out how you get the texture onto your picture. I opened my picture first, then opened a texture file. How do you get the texture file onto the picture. It was locked, so I learned to unlock the layer, but I can’t get the texture out of its file box, and move it onto the picture file. Help greatly appreciated!

  6. Hi Erin, You can either go to the other document and simply drag the unlocked layer onto the other document or when in your original PS document you can go to the file menu and select “Place” and it will prompt you to browse for your texture file and allow you to resize before placing it into your document.

  7. Thank you!!!!!
