Evacuated from Home

There is so much going on currently in the Jasper’s digestion/refulx/allergies saga that I haven’t had time to blog about it.. and of course every day that I put it off there’s more to write about…will update soon.

But for now I want to just beg all of you to make sure you have a WORKING carbon monoxide detector in your home!

Last night we smelled gas in the house. Concerned that maybe a pilot light had gone out when we tripped one of our circuits I asked Jeff if we had a carbon monoxide detector in the house.

He said yes, but it wasn’t hooked up (our seller had left them for us because there is a NY state law that they must be in a house when sold) so he hooked it up last night.

This morning it went off.

The person who came from our Power company said that near our ancient clogged up boiler (the source of the leak) the amount was 500 parts per million (which is a lot!).

There were elevated readings throughout the downstairs and upstairs and he insisted that I get out of the house with Jasper immediately.

What kills me the most is that the elevated readings were there even though there is an airtight door now that blocks the basement from the rest of the house, but up until 3 days ago there was just one of those accordion doors, so the level was probably much higher for god knows how long.

I feel so bad for little Jasper that he’s been exposed to that poison albeit in small amounts probably for his whole life because we were too negligent/lazy to install a simple device :(

It’s also sooo scary to think what might have happened if the boiler hadn’t also been leaking a chemical that smelled.. otherwise we would have probably never thought to install the detector and wouldn’t have known about the gas leak because carbon monoxide on it’s own has no smell!

  1. This just happened in Colorado (where I live) that has made a lot of people buy carbon dioxide detectors.

    Glad you were all safe.

  2. just glad you figured it out and caught it in time! Hope you get to return to your carbon monoxide free home soon.

  3. That is so scary. I always check my carbon monoxide alarm since we moved to an older home, but not nearly enough.

  4. I’m so glad the events transpired as they did so you figured out the carbon monoxide. A friend died from carbon monoxide poisoning so it’s a very real fear of mine.

I hope Jaspers reflux/allergies saga isn’t too difficult to deal with. I’m going through huge sleep issues with Annora right now, and that’s killing me so I can only imagine what you’re going through.

  5. An excellent message to spread, especially this time of year. An incident recently happened in Ontario as well.
