Hello Second Trimester!

Today I am 13 weeks and 3 days pregnant. That is (almost) exactly one third of the 40 weeks, and so I’m calling it the beginning of the second trimester, even though opinions of this vary wildly from OB to OB and from person to person. I’ve heard everything from 13 -14 weeks. But 1/3 of 40 makes the most sense to me, so I’m sticking to it!

By all accounts the second trimester is the “best” trimester. By now most preggos have left morning sickness in the dust, have gained their energy (and libido?) back and are not subject to so many of the 1st and 3rd trimester restrictions.

It does seem to be true, I am feeling quite a bit better, my ravenous hunger has SOMEWHAT subsided… though sadly I have now gotten used to my “eat every 1.5 hour schedule” even though my metabolism hasn’t caught up. I have now gained 15lbs.

15 lbs people!! My other friend who is due in may has gained 17 lbs and I’m only 13 weeks. This cannot continue. But I’m not sure what to do.. my body seems to want more food/nourishment than my metabolism can keep up with. Sigh.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the second trimester mostly for the “big” ultrasound when we get to find out the sex of the baby. I feel like so many things hinge on that one moment.. things like registering for stuff, picking a name, decorating the nursery etc etc.

But for now I’m mostly grateful that we’ve come through the minefield that is the 1st trimester knowing that while anything can happen, our chances of miscarriage are now greatly reduced which is a huge relief. That and the fact that I can finally get my hair highlighted again!

  1. the weight gain will most likely slow down. i gained a lot in my first, none in my second, and then some in my third…and then a lovely 6lbs of water weight the last week of my pregnancy. i’m just glad that the water weight is pretty easy to lose without any effort! :) take care, glad to hear things are going well for you!

  2. Thanks Hayley, I really hope that is the case for me too!!

  3. Don’t stress about the weight gain! You started out thin, so it’s normal! I felt like I gained a lot by 15 weeks and then it tapered off for a while, and now it’s starting again in the 3rd tri! Enjoy having your energy back, it’s true that it goes away again at the end!

  4. Hello Ariana! I am due on August 13th, so you and I are practically on the same course. I enjoy reading your blog. Its my first baby, too!! Keep posting pictures please, and take a look at my site when you get a chance — I plan to update it later this week, so for now you’ll only see what I looked like before the 10 lbs. I’ve gained. :) It sucks, I know, but everyone keeps telling me its normal to get bigger. You’re having a baby!! Nice to meet you.

  5. Hi Katherine, very nice to meet you too!
I checked out your site, very impressive. It must be even more difficult dealing with the weight gain etc when you are in show business. I suppose I’m lucky that I can wear frumpy sweaters and jeans to work, no one is expecting me to look good :)

    Stay in touch!

  6. Hey Ariana. I’m due September 11th (13 weeks & 2 days) and I too have gained 15 pounds!!! AHHH I suppose It’ll be ok though. Just wanted to let you know you’re not the only one. (I’m glad I’m not the only one, lol.) Take Care
